Apply through SmartRecruiters

A resume that prefills the form, screening questions, an optional profile, and a candidate portal that shows status. What to check, and the common fixes.

SmartRecruiters is the hiring system behind many large European and global employers' postings. Its form sits at jobs.smartrecruiters.com/company and runs on one long page: upload a resume, the parse fills the profile fields, answer the screening questions, add a message, submit. You can apply as a guest or with a SmartRecruiters profile, and the profile is one of the few that earns its keep, because it gives you a portal where the status of every application at every employer on the system shows in one place.

Key points

  • The address is jobs.smartrecruiters.com/company, or the company's own site with the form embedded.
  • Guest or profile. The profile is worth having if you apply to several employers on the system.
  • Upload the resume first. The prefill fills contact, experience and education.
  • Screening questions include knockouts. Read each one twice.
  • The portal shows status per application once you have a profile.

The form

Section What it asks What to check
Resume Upload, or import from a profile The tailored copy, uploaded first
Contact Name, email, phone, location The prefill, read line by line
Experience and education Prefilled from the parse Dates and titles
Screening questions The employer's: authorisation, salary, availability, custom Knockouts among them
Message to the hiring manager A free text box Two to four short paragraphs, the letter's shape
Privacy consent A checkbox for data handling Required. Read what it covers.

The message box is read by the hiring manager. Treat it as the letter.

The prefill

The parse fills experience and education as entries you can open and edit. Open each one. The common failures are a date set to the current month because the parser could not read "present", and a title that absorbed the company name. The dates on these entries are what the record holds, and the record is what the check compares.

The screening questions

Employers write them, and some are marked disqualifying without showing you which. Right to work, location, years with a tool, a licence. Answer truthfully. The form ends fast on a disqualifying answer, with an email, and that is faster than a month of silence on a role you could not have.

The message box

SmartRecruiters labels it a message to the hiring manager, and it is read by one. Two to four short paragraphs in the shape from the guide on cover letters: the role, the one thing with a number, what you would do first, when you are free. Written in a text file first, pasted in. Under 250 words.

The profile and the portal

Applying with a profile stores your resume and answers for the next employer on the system, and gives you a portal with every application and its status: new, in review, interview, offered, rejected. Status moves when the recruiter moves it. For someone applying to several large employers, the portal replaces a dozen "any update?" emails.

The profile is yours. Employers you did not apply to cannot see it unless you turn on a setting that lets them search, which is off by default. Leave it off unless you want recruiters to find you, which is a choice with a trade-off the guide on how to get noticed by recruiters covers.

A required checkbox that covers how the employer and SmartRecruiters handle your data, under EU privacy law for most of these employers. It usually says how long the record is kept. You can ask for deletion later under the same law, and the privacy notice says where.

On this site

Tailor rewrites your resume and cover letter against the posting before you open the form, so the words you paste in are the ones the posting used. When you send it, add the row in Track, with the ATS score you sent it at. We do not fill the form for you: the pledge on this site says we will not apply on your behalf.

Before you open the form

The tailored resume exported and named. The cover letter written, because the message box is where it goes and the box is not the place to write it. The answers to the standard screening questions in a text file: right to work, location, start date, salary range from the guide on salary expectations. With those three on the desk, the form takes fifteen minutes. Without them, it takes an hour and a timeout.

Questions

Do I make the profile?

If you will apply to more than two employers on the system, yes. The portal is the reason. If it is one application, apply as a guest.

Can I edit an application after submitting?

No. The portal shows it, and a correction goes by email to the recruiter.

The form asks for a photo. Is it required?

No. It is a profile field some employers show. Leave it empty unless the country expects one.

How long until the status moves?

When the recruiter moves it. Weekly at most large employers. The guide on how long until you hear back has the timelines, and the portal saves you the email.

Does the message box have a limit?

Usually not. Keep it under 250 words anyway. It is read on a screen by someone with a pile.
