Privacy Policy
This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and what control you have. We try to be specific. If anything is unclear, email us and we'll answer plainly.
"We", "us", and "our" refer to Miserably Employed, LLC, the company that operates the Miserably Unemployed Job Board and Tailoring Service (the "Service").
1. What we collect
We collect the following categories of information:
- Account information. Your email address, name (if you provide one), and authentication credentials. We use a third-party auth provider (Better Auth) to handle password hashing and session management.
- Personas and resumes. The persona profiles, resume bullet points, and any other content you upload or generate inside the Service.
- Tailoring history. Records of which job postings you have generated tailored output for, the prompts that produced that output, and the output itself. This lets you re-open past tailoring sessions and helps us debug issues you report.
- Payment information. Stripe handles all payment processing. We never see or store your card number. Stripe returns a customer ID and purchase amount to us, which we associate with your account so we can credit your balance.
- Usage data. Server logs of the API endpoints you hit and basic analytics about which pages you visit. We use Google Analytics for aggregate usage trends; you can block this with a tracker blocker or browser setting if you prefer.
- Browser extension data. If you install our optional browser extension, it reads the job posting on the page you are viewing to tailor your resume, retrieves your saved profile to pre-fill application forms, and saves the answers you type into those forms to your account so it can pre-fill them next time. It never reads or stores password fields. See Section 12 for details.
2. How we use it
- To operate the Service: authentication, storing your work, billing.
- To generate tailored resumes and other AI output: your persona content and the job description are sent to our AI providers (currently Anthropic and OpenAI) for that single generation. We do not use your content to train any third-party model.
- To improve the Service: aggregated, anonymized usage patterns help us spot what's slow or broken.
- To respond when you contact support.
- To prevent abuse and enforce our Terms of Use.
3. AI providers and what they see
When you generate a tailored output, the relevant persona content and the job description are transmitted to our AI provider (Anthropic or OpenAI, depending on the model we route the request to). Their respective privacy and data-handling policies apply to that transmission. We use the providers' standard API tiers, which under their current terms do not retain prompt or completion data for training purposes.
4. Job listings
The job postings shown on the Service are aggregated from publicly available third-party sources (applicant tracking systems and public job board APIs). We do not collect information about which postings you view, beyond what normal server logs capture.
5. Cookies and similar technologies
We use first-party cookies to keep you signed in (these are strictly necessary and cannot be disabled while you use the Service). We use third-party cookies from Stripe to handle checkout.
Two additional categories of tracking are optional and require your explicit opt-in via the cookie banner we show on your first visit:
- Analytics (Google Analytics). Aggregate pageviews and event counts. Lets us see which pages are most useful.
- Session replay (Hotjar). Heatmaps and anonymized recordings of how visitors move around the page. Lets us spot confusing UI without having to ask each user.
- Session replay (SessionSight). Heatmaps, anonymized replay, and conversion goal tracking. Serves the same purpose as Hotjar while we evaluate which tool to keep. You can opt into either, both, or neither.
You can change your choice at any time by clicking "Cookie preferences" in the footer of any page. Withdrawing consent stops the relevant scripts from loading on subsequent page views. Scripts already loaded on the current page continue to run until you navigate. Browser-level cookie controls work too: clearing cookies signs you out and discards any stored consent decision.
6. How long we keep data
- Account data and personas are kept for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete this data within thirty days.
- Tailoring history and generated output (the tailored resumes and cover letters you produce, and the record of which postings you produced them for) are automatically deleted ninety days after they are created, or within thirty days of account deletion if sooner. You can regenerate output at any time from a saved job and persona.
- Job postings are kept on a rolling basis. Closed postings are soft-closed after four days of not appearing in their source feed, and hard-deleted three days after that.
- Server logs are retained for thirty days for debugging, then rotated.
- Billing records are kept for as long as required by tax law (typically seven years), even after account deletion.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, export, correct, or delete the personal data we hold about you. To exercise any of these rights, email support@miserablyemployed.com from the address associated with your account. We'll respond within a reasonable timeframe.
You can also delete your account directly from your account settings at any time.
8. Children
The Service is intended for users 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it.
9. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including TLS for traffic in transit, hashed credentials at rest, and access controls on our database. No system is perfectly secure. If we ever become aware of a breach affecting your data, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law.
10. International users
The Service is operated from the United States. If you access it from outside the US, your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy materially, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in-product or by email. Continued use of the Service after a change means you accept the revised policy.
12. The browser extension
Our optional browser extension (Chrome and Firefox) pre-fills job application forms and lets you tailor your resume from the job page you are viewing. It is built to stay inert during normal browsing and acts only when you invoke it on a job page or on an application you queued.
- Your profile. Your saved name, email, phone, profile links, and resume and work history are retrieved from your account to pre-fill the application form on the page. You review everything before you submit.
- Job posting content. The text of the posting on the page you are viewing is read to tailor your resume and draft answers, and is sent to our AI providers (see Section 3) for that generation.
- Answers you type. Answers you enter into application forms are saved to your account as a reusable answer bank so future forms can be pre-filled. Password fields are never read or stored.
- Authentication token. A token is kept in the browser's extension storage to link the extension to your account. It is sent only to our own servers.
The extension does not sell or share your data with third parties, does not track your browsing history, and does not use your data for anything other than providing these features. Its broad site-access, tabs, and scripting permissions exist solely so it can reach the application form on whichever employer or applicant-tracking domain hosts it, since a single apply flow often spans several domains that cannot be listed in advance. You can disconnect it at any time by signing out or removing the extension.
