Scribd is a digital library and subscription platform providing access to millions of ebooks, audiobooks, podcasts, magazines, and documents. Founded in 2007 by Trip Adler, Jared Friedman, and Tikhon Bernstov in San Francisco, the company operates as a private organization with approximately 750 employees. Scribd serves millions of global subscribers through its subscription model, competing with Amazon's Kindle Unlimited and Audible while emphasizing curation and accessibility. The platform has expanded significantly into audiobooks in recent years and maintains international offices across the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. The company has raised over $400 million in venture funding and focuses on democratizing access to content across all reading formats.
Scribd cultivates a mission-driven culture centered on making knowledge and storytelling accessible to readers worldwide. The company emphasizes collaborative teamwork between editorial, product, and engineering, valuing long-term reader trust over aggressive monetization. Growth and expansion, particularly in audiobooks and international markets, shape strategic priorities. Hybrid work arrangements and offices in multiple cities support a globally distributed team.
