Role Overview

Help tell the stories that matter to communities across the country as you launch your journalism career. As a Hearst Journalism Fellow with Hearst Newspapers, you'll build your skills alongside top journalists who use cutting-edge tools to tell stories through data, video and more, delivering journalism that connects with audiences in a changing digital world.

The Fellowship is a two-year program made up of two 12-month rotations at our top metro newspapers: San Francisco, Houston, San Antonio, Albany and one of our papers in Connecticut. You'll receive training, mentoring and real-world experience, and you'll collaborate with editors, reporters, visual journalists and audience teams to develop distinctive journalism that serves audiences. Fellows are full-time employees with competitive salary and benefits.

On-site: This role is based on-site at your assigned newspaper for each 12-month rotation and requires relocation to your first- and second-year rotation locations.

What You’ll Do

  • Report and produce journalism across platforms, including data, video and other digital storytelling, alongside experienced journalists at two of our top metro newspapers.
  • Cover stories and beats in your assigned market, with reliable transportation to report on location.
  • Complete two 12-month rotations, relocating to your assigned location for each.
  • Build a foundation for your journalism career through hands-on training and real-world experience.
  • Work with your mentor, a peer with expertise in your area of interest, to set and reach career goals.
  • Follow the formal development plan designed by your direct supervisor.

What You’ll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • A college degree and an interest in, experience in or background in journalism or related fields, including digital development and reporting.
  • Willingness to relocate to your assigned first- and second-year rotation locations.
  • Transportation in each rotation to cover stories, beats and assignments.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. for the entire two-year term of the Fellowship.

What It Could Mean for Your Future

The goal of the program is for Fellows who successfully complete it to be offered a job at the end of the two years. Participation is not a guarantee of future employment, but we are recruiting candidates who will eventually join our full-time professional staff. Hearst Fellowships jump-start great journalism careers, and our objective is to recruit, train and retain a diverse group of journalists, including digital developers and reporters, who will grow in one of the world’s best journalism organizations.

How Fellows Are Selected

  • A panel of Hearst’s top editors reviews applications and selects finalists.
  • Candidates submit a writing test, and finalists are interviewed in February.
