Overview

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department Facility Coding Specialist to join our remote coding team. This role is responsible for reviewing emergency department medical records and accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS, and facility Evaluation & Management (E/M) codes while ensuring compliance with payer, regulatory, and organizational requirements.

The ideal candidate will have recent emergency department facility-fee coding experience, strong knowledge of injection and infusion coding, and an active coding certification through AAPC or AHIMA.

Responsibilities

  • Review emergency department medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT/HCPCS procedure codes, and applicable modifiers.
  • Accurately assign facility E/M levels based on client-specific emergency department leveling guidelines and facility charging methodologies, including use of the ACEP leveling tool.
  • Analyze documentation from physicians, nursing staff, ancillary departments, and diagnostic services to ensure complete code assignment and charge capture.
  • Apply official coding guidelines, CMS regulations, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and payer-specific requirements.
  • Review accounts for accurate coding of procedures, injections, and infusions.
  • Identify documentation deficiencies and communicate coding clarification needs through established channels.
  • Maintain compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payer, and organizational coding policies.
  • Participate in coding quality reviews, audits, education initiatives, and process improvement activities.
  • Stay current on coding updates, reimbursement changes, and regulatory requirements impacting emergency department facility coding.
  • Collaborate with coding leadership, auditors, and client representatives to resolve coding-related questions and issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of facility-fee outpatient coding experience, with a strong focus on Emergency Department coding.
  • Hands-on experience coding injections and infusions.
  • Active professional coding certification through AAPC or AHIMA (required), including one of the following:
    • CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
    • CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
    • RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
    • RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator)
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • ICD-10-CM coding
    • CPT/HCPCS coding
    • Facility E/M leveling methodologies
    • ACEP emergency department leveling guidelines
    • NCCI edits and CMS regulations
  • Proven ability to work independently and efficiently in a remote environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to coding accuracy, quality, and compliance.
  • Ability to analyze complex medical documentation from multiple clinical disciplines and accurately capture all applicable services and charges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Epic EMR/EHR systems.
  • Additional experience with facility-fee outpatient coding specialties.
  • Physician-fee coding experience.
  • Prior experience working in a high-volume remote coding environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Phoenix, AZ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
