At Lilly, the work is demanding because patients are waiting. We unite caring with discovery to help make life better for people around the world, knowing that every decision, every detail, and every day matters. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, our over 50,000 employees around the globe take on complex challenges to discover and deliver life-changing medicines, strengthen how health is understood and managed, and support the communities we serve. This is hard, urgent, selfless work—but it’s work worth doing. If you’re driven by purpose and ready to bring your best to work that truly matters for patients, we invite you to join us.
The Enterprise Data Platforms (EDP) organization is an engineering team responsible for database reliability, enterprise integration, and analytics service operations across Lilly's global technology estate. EDP manages Oracle and SQL Server fleets spanning 2,500+ databases, API management platforms, enterprise file transfer services, and operational analytics — all underpinning Lilly's mission to make life better for people around the world. Our intern program is not a side project. You will join a real team, own a real initiative, and ship real work that EDP engineers depend on. We believe the best way to develop talent is to treat interns as engineers from day one.
Role Overview:
As a Cloud Infrastructure & PRE Intern in the Enterprise Data Platforms (EDP) organization , you will work alongside experienced cloud and reliability engineers to automate, scale, and harden infrastructure supporting databases and enterprise integration services across global production and non-production environments.
The EDP Database Services tower manages Oracle and SQL Server fleets across PROD, NON-PROD, and DR environments globally. As an Observability & Platform Reliability Intern, you will extend and refine the EDP Database Control Tower — an executive and operational monitoring platform — while building new alerting, KPI instrumentation, and reliability tooling. This role sits at the intersection of database engineering and modern observability practice, offering rare exposure to fleet-scale database operations.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Extend the EDP Database Control Tower (HTML/JavaScript dashboard) with new telemetry panels, geographic fleet views, and DBA operational layers.
- Develop and tune Prometheus alert rules and Grafana dashboards for Oracle and SQL Server fleet health, capacity, and SLO compliance.
- Write SQL and PL/SQL queries to extract database KPIs — performance, availability, space, session, backup — and wire them into the observability pipeline.
- Build Python scripts to automate data collection from Oracle fleet endpoints, transforming raw metrics into structured time-series data.
- Collaborate with DBAs to translate operational pain points into observable signals — reducing mean time to detect (MTTD) for database incidents.
- Document alert playbooks, KPI definitions, and dashboard design decisions in a shared knowledge base for the DBA operations team.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Pursuing a B.Tech / M.Tech in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
- Solid SQL skills (Oracle SQL or SQL Server preferred); PL/SQL experience is a strong plus.
- Exposure to at least one observability or monitoring tool — Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, Dynatrace, or similar.
- Comfortable with Python for scripting data pipelines and API integrations.
- Interest in database internals, reliability engineering, or enterprise platform operations.
- Ability to work independently on a clearly scoped project while collaborating with a senior DBA and SRE team.
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN
- Real ownership of a production-facing observability capability used by EDP's global DBA team.
- Exposure to Oracle and SQL Server fleet management at pharmaceutical enterprise scale.
- Direct access to EDP's senior SRE engineers and the Director of Enterprise Data Platforms.
- Skills in the LGTM observability stack (Loki, Grafana, Tempo, Mimir) — increasingly in demand across the industry.
- A portfolio-ready project with measurable impact on platform reliability and DBA operational efficiency.
