Salary Range : $85,000 to $90,000 per annum

Position Summary
The Irrigation Designer will be responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing the implementation, optimisation, and maintenance of irrigation systems across D Fresh Produce's expanding hydroponic and soil-based farming operations. The position plays a critical role in supporting increased production capacity, efficient water resource management, and sustainable crop cultivation.
The role requires strong practical expertise in irrigation design, water distribution systems, irrigation scheduling, and agricultural operations. The Irrigation Designer will work closely with farm management to ensure irrigation infrastructure supports crop growth requirements, changing production needs, environmental conditions, and future farm expansion projects.
Key Responsibilities
Irrigation System Design and Planning
• Assess land, crop types, and soil/hydroponic conditions to determine irrigation needs.
• Design tailored irrigation systems, including layout, pressure requirements, and water distribution methods for both hydroponic and traditional soil farming.
• Prepare specifications, detailed drawings, and costing for irrigation installation projects.
Project Management and Implementation
• Coordinate and supervise installation and commissioning of new irrigation systems.
• Evaluate existing irrigation infrastructure and oversee upgrades or retrofitting to improve water efficiency and crop coverage.
• Liaise with suppliers and contractors to procure appropriate equipment and materials.
Water Resource Management
• Monitor water usage and implement systems to minimise waste and maximise sustainability.
• Recommend and implement water-saving technologies such as automated timers, moisture sensors, low-flow delivery systems, and integrated water-fertiliser management technologies.
• Support sustainable water practices, including reuse and rainwater integration.
Operational Support and Maintenance
• Develop and implement maintenance schedules to ensure the efficient functioning of irrigation systems.
• Provide hands-on training to farm staff for daily operation and basic troubleshooting of irrigation equipment.
• Diagnose issues in pump systems, blockages, leaks, or pressure fluctuations, and provide timely resolution.
Compliance and Reporting
• Ensure compliance with relevant water regulations and environmental standards.
• Maintain records on irrigation system performance, usage, and maintenance activities.
• Contribute to reporting and continuous improvement of irrigation practices.
Qualifications and Skills
• Relevant qualification or equivalent practical experience in irrigation design or agricultural technology.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in irrigation system design, installation, and maintenance within agricultural environments.
• Strong practical knowledge of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, irrigation scheduling and water distribution, soil moisture and crop growth requirements.
• Experience in monitoring crop conditions and adjusting irrigation to optimise yield and quality.
• Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and repair irrigation systems including pipelines, pumps, and valves.
• Understanding of general farm operations, including crop cultivation and field management.
• Ability to maintain accurate records of irrigation activities and system performance.
• Good communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work closely with farm management and staff.
