What You'll Do
NetDocuments is the platform legal professionals trust with their most sensitive work. As we continue evolving from a system that stores legal work to one that understands and connects it, the systems responsible for identity, authentication, and authorization have become more critical than ever. We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help shape the future of our security and access management platform, ensuring customers can securely access the right information at the right time. This is a highly visible, hands-on engineering role where you'll drive technical direction, build production systems, and influence platform architecture that supports thousands of organizations worldwide.
You will:
- Set and own the technical direction for identity, authentication, authorization, and access management services across the NetDocuments platform.
- Lead the evolution of our identity infrastructure, helping modernize foundational systems while maintaining stability, security, and compliance requirements.
- Design and build secure, scalable services using C#/.NET, AWS, and event-driven architecture patterns.
- Architect solutions that support complex authorization models, enterprise integrations, and high-volume transaction processing.
- Drive reliability, observability, performance, and scalability improvements across critical platform services.
- Partner with Product Management, Security, and Engineering teams to deliver secure and resilient customer-facing capabilities.
- Lead architectural discussions, design reviews, and technical decision-making across multiple engineering teams.
- Mentor engineers and raise the engineering bar through coaching, collaboration, and technical leadership.
- Contribute to hiring, team development, and continuous improvement of engineering practices.
What You'll Need to be Successful
- 7+ years of experience building and operating production software systems at scale.
- Expert-level proficiency with C#/.NET and modern software engineering practices.
- Experience designing and operating distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
- Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, identity management, and access control concepts.
- Experience designing systems that other engineering teams depend on as foundational platform infrastructure.
- Experience operating cloud-native applications and services within AWS environments.
- Strong understanding of system reliability, observability, scalability, and operational excellence.
- Proven ability to lead technical initiatives across teams and influence outcomes without direct authority.
- Experience navigating ambiguous technical challenges and driving solutions from concept through production.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
What Will Make You Stand Out
- You've led a major identity, authentication, or authorization transformation where other teams and customers depended on the systems you were changing.
- You've owned access control systems where a mistake could expose sensitive customer data, create compliance risk, or have legal consequences.
- You've designed permission models for complex organizations with competing security, usability, and scalability requirements.
- You've successfully modernized legacy platform infrastructure while maintaining uptime, customer trust, and operational stability.
- You've operated systems that were subject to external audits, regulatory oversight, or strict compliance requirements.
- You've been the technical decision-maker for critical platform services and can clearly explain the tradeoffs behind architectural decisions that impacted multiple teams.
- You've worked in an environment where security, identity, and access management were treated as core business functions rather than supporting features.
- You've built trust and influence across engineering teams, helping drive adoption of platform standards and architectural changes without relying on organizational authority.
