Job Description: Director of Vocal Music
Position Reports To: Minister and Worship Committee
Additional Advocacy and Support Provided By: Church and Ministry Committee and Activities and Marketing Coordinator
Function
The Director of Vocal Music works collaboratively with the Director of Instrumental Music to enhance worship and to create vibrant experiences that inspire the congregation and the community.
Confidentiality
During this work, the employee will have access to information that is considered confidential. It is important to respect the confidentiality of others; to follow procedures which protect privacy and to act in a professional manner. The employee may be dismissed from the position immediately if found acting indiscreetly with confidential material or not protecting privacy of others through their actions.
Responsibilities
1. Meet and confer with Director of Instrumental Music, Minister, Worship Committee, and other musicians to plan meaningful and appropriate vocal music for congregational worship, following UCC worship tradition/resources and the liturgical calendar.
2. Organize and direct special music for special occasions, including but not limited to music for Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
3. Occasionally introduce varied musical styles to broaden worship expression.
4. Timely submit weekly music selections to the church office for publication in the Sunday bulletin by Wednesday prior to the Sunday service, unless other mutual arrangements have been made.
5. Direct a small but committed adult choir, musicians, and vocalists in rehearsal and in congregational worship. The choir is expected to provide appropriate musical presentations for most Sunday morning services, except during the summer months (during which period special musical presentations may be arranged in coordination between the Minister, Director of Vocal Music, Director of Instrumental Music, and Worship Committee). The Choir shall be prepared to sing anthems, hymns, and responses.
6. Plan and lead weekly choir rehearsals and warm-ups prior to worship.
7. Assist in identification, recommendation, and purchase of appropriate music material in coordination with the Director of Instrumental Music, Minister, and Worship Committee.
8. Rebuild and expand the music ministry with a spirit of welcome and inclusion.
9. Develop and foster partnerships with other musicians and community organizations to bring meaningful, coordinated music offerings to the congregation.
10. In collaboration with the Activities and Marketing Coordinator, organize and oversee music-related events for community outreach.
11. Within reason when requested, provide music for weddings, funerals, and other services as available (with additional compensation as agreed).
12. Attend staff meetings and monthly Worship Committee meetings.
13. As scheduled, actively participate with the supervisor in setting work goals, periodic reviews, and annual evaluations.
14. All duties as assigned by supervisor.

Work Schedule and Location
• Hours: Rehearsals and performances as defined and required by the position and the activities and events of the congregation. Expected hours are approximately 8 hours per week for 40 weeks and 3 hours per week during the 12-week summertime period.
• Location: This position requires the employee to be on-site for rehearsal and performances. Planning and scheduling or other tasks may be done remotely.
• Handbook: Subject to the Employee Handbook of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ.
Qualifications for this Position
1. Formal music training (degree preferred) or equivalent experience in a church setting.
2. Experience with choir and music direction and working with singers of varied skill levels.
3. Ability to read music.
4. Proficiency in the use of standard office tools.
5. Strong organizational and time management skills.
6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
7. Ability to work independently and flexibly in a small-church environment.
8. A heart for ministry, collaboration, and creativity.
9. Must be able to pass a background check
Personal Time/Vacation
Due to this being a salaried position, the employee is allowed to arrange time off with prior approval as necessary so long as the employee can fulfill the duties laid out in this job description. Arrangement for time off will be made between the Director of Vocal Music, the Director of Instrumental Music, and the Minister to ensure continuity of rehearsal and performances.
Salary Schedule
This position is classified as exempt salaried. Pay is based upon the total number of hours expected to be worked throughout the year, despite the uneven nature of those hours throughout the year.
Procedure for Review
This position shall be reviewed annually.
Physical Requirements
Involves frequent sitting, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and standing. Light-labor activities to include setting up for musical events.
Termination
Employment can be terminated by either party. Resignations should be made in writing and delivered to the employee’s immediate supervisor. Employees are requested to provide two weeks’ notice.
